Why Wildwood?

Why is this site called Wildwood?

Back in the dark ages of the Internet personal connections were rare, had limited functionality, were very expensive and slow.

In 1992 Demon started to offer dial up access to a full Internet feed for £10 a month.

There was a limited choice of software available to provide such a service particularly at the client end (anyone out there remember KA9Q). There were also a number of restrictions one of which was that the domain name had to have eight or less characters. Coming up with a suitable name was in many ways more difficult than making the decision to sign up for the service.

As it happened I was at that time reading The Spirit by Will Eisner (possibly the finest graphic artist ever) and the hero (The Spirit) is really Denny Colt, believed dead and buried in Wildwood Cemetery.

Wildwood, eight characters - problem solved.

If you want to find out more about Will Eisner then this site is a good starting point.
