Florida Air Museum

The Florida Air Museum is located in Lakeland about 50 miles South West of Orlando and is the site of the “SUN ‘n FUN International Fly-In” held every April.

The museum is housed in a main building and in a hangar annex, there is also a restoration facility.  They are all are located on the campus of the Sun 'n Fun fly-in which supplies much of the funding for the museum's collections and programs.

The main building holds much of the collection, especially smaller aircraft like a Boeing-Stearman Model 75 together with a wide variety of unique designs including homebuilds - this is very much in keeping with the aircraft that attend the SUN ‘n FUN, Fly-In.  It also holds a collection of engines from WWI to the present day together with aviation memorabilia.  The hangar annex houses the larger aircraft and engines.

Particularly notable is the Howard Hughes aviation related material that the museum holds, this includes a 14-foot model of the Spruce Goose, Hughes’ leather flying suits, racing trophies, books, manuals, maps and scrapbooks.  Howard Hughes visited Florida many times and was enamoured with the flying boats he found. In addition Hughes’ close associate, Al Lodwick, who helped plan his trip around the world in 1938 was based in Lakeland.

Also among the memorabilia are items relating to Charles Lindbergh and his three month nation-wide tour when flying the "Spirit of St. Louis," he touched down in 48 states and visited 92 cities including on October 10, 1927 Jacksonville, Florida.
