Route 66
Route66-ud

This page is the introduction to my Route 66 trip in September 2005 from Chicago to Santa Monica (officially it’s around 2,500 miles but with side trips, detours and getting lost I eventually did 3,000 miles). It took about 14 days to do the trip and, in retrospect, I could probably have taken a few more days to see even more of the road.

There are eight pages each covering one of the states that Route 66 passes through.

There are some additional pages giving a description the Painted Desert / Petrified Forest and of various Route 66 resources I found useful.

NOTE - the situation as regards to the road and the resources will undoubtedly have changed since 2005 - please do not take my description as definitive but check for yourself.

Each state page consists of a selection of photographs together with notes about the trip through that state. I’ve included some recommendations for places not to miss together with, where available, links to the relevant web site.

A quick note about the weather, normally you expect some significant variation moving from the Great Lakes to the desert and finally California. For some reason when I did the trip the weather was uniformly hot being over 90 most days. The only exception was the last day in Santa Monica when it rained heavily in the morning and was only in the 70s! Who says it never rains in Southern California;-).

Lets get started in Illinois
