Sky Tower
ST00-IMGP5340

Auckland's Sky Tower is 328 metres high and is the tallest man-made structure in New Zealand.  Potentially it offers views for up to 80 kilometres in every direction - but not when I visited it.  There is a revolving restaurant and two observation decks, the main one at 186 metres (it has thick glass sections of flooring giving a view straight to the ground) and the Skydeck at 220 metres.  There is a SkyWalk round the top of the main observation deck at 192 metres and it is also possible to SkyJump off the Tower.

The following photographs were taken from the main observation deck with one exception that I’ll point out when relevant.  First here is a (rather damp and dreary) view of Auckland Harbour with the Auckland Harbour Bridge just visible.

Next here is a view directly downward through one of those glass floor panels.

A view across a damp Auckland showing some of the extinct volcanoes that the city is built on.

A view of Hobson Street, the  Auckland City Hotel is behind the tall apartment building right of centre.

A slightly clearer view of the marina in the harbour, not surprisingly there weren’t many people messing about with boats.

A view from above of the ferry terminal, this was where I left from when I went to Devonport.

Two photographs of somebody jumping off the tower (the SkyJump), the weather was so bad nobody else went outside while I was there.

A view of the Auckland War Memorial Museum that is featured on the next page.  The photograph is not out of focus, it appears blurred because it was taken through heavy rain.

ST09-IMGP5616

A view of one of Auckland’s extinct volcanoes.  Auckland straddles the Auckland Volcanic Field which has produced around 50 volcanoes, these take various forms such as cones, lakes, islands and depressions,

And finally a view of Auckland from the 'Skydeck' at 220 metres!

The clouds had come right down and when I went outside the top of the Sky Tower was no longer visible.
