Leaving Anchorage I took the a western route along Highway 1 back to the Alaska Highway.  The weather was much better than when I had driven down to Anchorage from Fairbanks and it was a very pleasant journey with empty roads and blue skies.

Despite the blue sky it was still quite cold as shown by the lake on the right in the photograph below that was still covered by ice .  The weather that had been very pleasant to this point was about to change for the worse - note the cloud building up in the distance.
