Sydney Tower Eye
ST01-IMGP4640

The Sydney Tower is 309 metres high and is located  in the Sydney Central Business District surrounded by tall buildings which means it is basically impossible to photograph except from the distance, the above photograph was taken from the pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.  The tower is a major tourist attraction with a number of features including revolving restaurants such as the Sydney Tower Buffet which I tried and found quite pleasant.

There is an Observation Deck, called the Sydney Tower Eye, that allows a 360 degree view of Sydney and the surroundings.  Most of the photographs on this page were taken from this Observation Deck.

There is also the Skywalk which is is an open-air, glass-floored platform encircling the Sydney Tower Eye at a height of 268 metres.  It includes a moving viewing platform which extends out over the edge of the main structure of the deck.  For comparison the Sydney Harbour Bridge is 134 metres high.

If you feel energetic each year the Sydney Tower Run-up gives you the challenge of running up the 1,504 stairs from street level to the Observation Deck

The first photograph is a view over the Royal Botanic Garden and the harbour with the harbour mouth towards the top.

This is the Anzac Bridge named in 1998 to honour the memory of the soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who served in World War I.  An Australian Flag flies atop the eastern pylon and a New Zealand Flag flies atop the western pylon (this apparently confuses many visitors who ask if they are now in New Zealand).

A view of Fort Denison and the varying harbour traffic.

A view of a sternwheeler coming into Darling Harbour.

A view of Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport, it is much closer to the city than I thought and I’m still not sure why the shuttle I took to my hotel took so long.

And finally a photograph I did not take.  I went out on the Skywalk (in the snazzy suit and safety strap they provide) and after walking around the top of the Sydney Tower Eye we came to the main (glass) observation platform which, while you are standing on it, is extended out into thin air allowing you to look down the full 268 metres to the ground.  They then shuffle you onto the platform individually for photographs which are taken by Skywalk / Tower Eye staff using a camera attached to the building (you have to leave cameras and everything inside).  You are encouraged to jump on the platform to show how strong it is.

This is me gaining another metre and demonstrating my confidence in the Strength of Materials course I took at college.

Next it’s a visit to the Sydney Opera House
